About 2,750 people in Alnwick are entitled to free off-peak bus travel. Some rough calculations on the back of an envelope suggest that about 280 of those haven’t applied for a bus pass, and about 1,500 have got a bus pass, but don’t use it.
This scheme is designed to encourage sustainable travel, and to help ensure that our local bus services remain viable. It costs nothing. But it looks as though more than half the people in Alnwick who are entitled to concessionary travel aren’t using it.
