How did we make the images for our February Picture Quiz?

We’ve been asked how we made the images for our February Picture Quiz. <here>

It’s not digital trickery, and we are not shrinking members of the Civic Society in an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint.

The model figures come from a company called Modelu. https://www.modelu3d.co.uk/

They make them by scanning real people then creating figures at various different scales using a 3-d printer.

They mainly do this for railway modellers.

After painting, different groups of the figures were arranged on a little tray of plasticine to hold them in place.

The tray was attached to a simple rig that also held the camera.

We used a mirrorless camera (Fuji X-E3), fitted with an old Pentax 50mm Macro lens.

To get enough depth of field for the backgrounds to be recognisable needs a very small aperture, which demands a long exposure. So the rig is mounted on a tripod.

Then it’s just a matter of experimenting with different views to find some that work.
