In line with its charitable purpose to provide educative experiences for the public in the geography, history, natural history, and architecture in the area, Alnwick Civic Society organises a series of events throughout the year which are generally open to members and non-members alike. These events, which include guest speakers and visits to local sites and attractions, are free where possible or charged at the minimum rate to cover costs.
19th November: Any Questions
Each year we are joined by a distinguished panel for a civilised discussion of topical local issues.
Breathing new life into existing buildings
Renovating and adapting an existing building, rather than demolishing and constructing new, is a practice that contributes to heritage conservation, sustainable development and economic regeneration. But such projects can also have their challenges. In Alnwick we have several outstanding examples. Some are well-established. Some are more recent. We look forward to more. So what lessons can we learn?
St James’s Church, Wednesday 19th November. Doors Open 7:00 p.m. for 7:30 start.
“Alnwick through the lens”
The exhibition is now closed. However, more than 700 images can still be viewed online . This includes many that could not be shown in the exhibition <here>.
Guided walks
We like to organise guided walks in conjunction with a partner organisation. On most you will join members of the Civic Society to explore aspects of Alnwick’s heritage that are away from the main visitor hotspots, to discover how the town’s character was been shaped by early settlers, medieval conflict, powerful families, skilled trades, Georgian taste and Victorian innovation. If your organisation would like to join us, please <get in touch> to discuss how we might tailor the content to suite your areas of interest.
